"The pains of death are past,
Labor and sorrow cease,
And life's long warfare closed at last,
His soul is found in peace."

It is thought that John L. Allen was the first white man to live among the Chickasaw Indian Nation in Tennessee.

Major John L. Allen, was a native of Surry County, North Carolina, son of Revolutionary War veteran David and Nancy McConnell Allen. He came among the Chickasaws in 1796.
He was the commander of Fort Hampton, Alabama in 1810; postmaster at Paris, Tennessee in 1816; assistant agent to the Chickasaws, 1829 - 1837;
The Monroe Mission Church Session Records ~ 1834 ~ Pontontoc
County, MS
July 6 1834. ...George, a native man, was examined...Maj. John L. Allen was also admitted...
John L. Allen operated a tavern at Pontotoc in 1837, and later moved to Columbus, Mississippi.
He appears on the 1836, 1840, and 1850 censuses for Lowndes County, Mississippi.

About Fort Hampton;
After the construction of Fort Mitchell in 1811 on the Chattahoochee River in present-day Russell County, Alabama, the Black Warriors' Path became known as Mitchell Trace. The old trail became a post road connecting Fort Hampton, a Cherokee/Chickasaw Indian outpost located near the forks of Elk River and the Tennessee River in Limestone County, to Fort Mitchell, a Creek outpost. Fort Mitchell was named after David Brady Mitchell, an Indian agent.

John L. Allen married Margaret Colbert, daughter of Gen. William 'Billy' "Chooshemataha" Colbert , Chickasaw Indian Chief.
The Colbert family were known as "The Mississippi River Pirates" Taken up early with the Chickasaw's in Tennessee.
Margaret is not listed on the 1818 Chickasaw Annuity Roll, it is possible that she was already married to John Allen by that date.. It is known that by 1823, she was married to John L. Allen. Recorded in the deed records of Pontotoc County, Mississippi, is a "Deed of Gift" from General Andrew Jackson to Solomon Clark for Mrs. Margaret Allen. It is dated August 22, 1840. The deed recalls that in 1823 several slaves were sold at public auction at a Sheriff's sale in Davidson County Tennessee as the property of John L. Allen to satisfy a payment against him. That General Andrew Jackson furnished funds to Solomon Clark to purchase the slaves for the purpose of securing said slaves for, "the benefit of Mrs. Margaret Allen, the wife of John L. Allen.

It appears that by 1842, Margaret and John may have been divorced as there is recorded in the Lowndes County, Mississippi Court Records a case involving Chickasaw Nation lands styled, Margaret Allen, by next friend, Solomon Clark of Pontotoc County, Mississippi, v. John L. Allen, (husband of the Complainant), [and others].
