He was born Feb. 22, 1943, in Conicville in Shenandoah County and was a son of the late Staylor Braxton Eugene and Lillie Virginia Mumaw Hamilton.
Mr. Hamilton was self-employed and was the owner and operator of the former Hamilton's Trading Post in New Market.
Ralph loved auctions, flea markets and yard sales and was famous for his "bad jokes." He was very proud of his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruth Halterman Hamilton; two children, Kathy Nelson and her husband, Rusty, of Waynesboro, and Jim Hamilton and his wife, Dolores, of Strasburg; two brothers, Merle Hamilton of New Market and Gene Hamilton of Front Royal; two sisters, Louise Mason of New Market and Mary Bowley of Middletown; a grandson, James Hamilton of Quicksburg; and two granddaughters, Vanessa Jackson of Dallas, Texas, and Samantha Garrison of Gore.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Richard Hamilton.
The Rev. Glen Turner will conduct a funeral service Friday at 11 a.m. at Wood's Chapel Independent Bible Church, north of New Market. Interment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, north of New Market.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Market Fire and Rescue.
