Promise fulfilled
Fate promised Gaston when Gaston was dying that he would take care of Mattie and her Children, Velma, Delma, Helen, Roy, and Gerry. He did this until they were all grown and married. While the family was still in Arkansas some of the money Fate needed was obtained by bootlegging. In 1937 he moved the family along with his parents to California. The journey and the conditions endured was very similar to that of the Joads in John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath". At the time of the trip Velma and Delma were married and their spouses joined the party to California. Also Velma was pregnant with her first child during the trip.
