Born Nachum Pimshteyn in Nesvizh, Russia (now Belarus). Was the son of a baker. First of his family to immigrate to US, in 1904. Set up a harness maker's shop, which evolved into a tire store/auto repair garage as motorized vehicles replaced horses. The garage was located on Leverett Circle in Boston's West End, just across the bridge from today's Museum of Science. His wife and children joined him in Boston in 1906. The family name was changed to Pinstein around 1908.
Had four brothers, three of whom immigrated shortly after Nathan, lived for a time in Boston, and moved to Memphis in the 19-teens: Theodore, Aleck and Morris Pinstein.
His only older brother, Meir/Myer, died in Russia in 1922. Myer's wife Ida Pinstein and her children immigrated to the US shortly thereafter.
