Sgt. Javier Marin of Mission, Texas grew up in Mission and was a graduate of Mission High School. The family last heard from him the day he died, when he e-mailed to thank them for the cards they sent for his birthday. As a youth he would play basketball at Astroland Park in Mission. It was a ritual he and his friends had. The park was their hangout. Everyone called him "Javi." He grew to be a a strong man. He was responsible, respectful and one to never give in to peer pressure. His father who is from Cerravo, N.L., Mexico was always talking about his son and showing pictures. He felt as if his son had accomplished the "American Dream." And Javier enjoyed being a soldier. After he completed a three-year term, during which he served in Bosnia, he enrolled for another three years. His second tour of duty, or at least the part of it when he would be in Iraq, was scheduled to end Feb. 17. He would have come home for some "R&R" and then served out the rest of his time more comfortably in Germany. He was the 15th local serviceman to die in Iraq and the second serviceman from Mission to die in Iraq in less than a month. Javier was killed at age 29 when his Bradley fighting vehicle overturned in Mohammed Sacran, Iraq. Four other soldiers were also killed.
