The teenagers from the Polk County community of Frederic were headed to Grantsburg Tuesday evening where they were to meet the bus and their teammates from the Triple-A Northern Wisconsin Blizzard.
Their vehicle crashed on Highway 48 when the driver lost control. Sixteen-year-old Tim Bekshentayev was killed. Two teammates were hurt. Their conditions were not immediately available.
The team planned to retire Bekshentayev's jersey at their final regular season game Thursday night in Grantsburg.
The passenger killed Tuesday, 02-03-15 in a single vehicle crash west of Frederic on State Highway 48 in the Town of Trade Lake has been identified as Tim Bekshentayev, age 16, of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Bekshentayev was an exchange student attending Frederic High School in Frederic, WI this school year.
Preliminary investigation results indicate that the vehicle that Bekshentayev was riding in was westbound on STH 48 when the driver apparently lost control on the snow covered highway and slid into the ditch, striking a tree. It does not appear that any of the occupants were wearing their seat belts.
The juvenile driver and the juvenile passenger in the vehicle were medically transported from the scene to local hospitals; there is no update on their conditions.
