GASTONIA - Rich Eliga "Red" King, 75, died Oct. 6, 2013, at his residence.

He was born in Mecklenburg County on Sept. 30, 1938, son of the late James Washington and Gertrude Rabon King.

He was preceded in death by his wife Louise Steele King, and a sister Rachel Mills.

One of his first jobs was a sewing machine mechanic with Joel Toggs, Inc. He later was a bus driver for City Coach Company (now American Charters, Inc). He served over 61 years with search and rescue and other volunteer services in Gaston County. In 1976, he and his wife founded King's Transport, and worked with the NC State Medical Examiner's office. He sold the business in 1990. From 1990 – 2003 he was employed with the state IMAP (Interstate Motorist Assistance Patrol). For his many years of volunteer service Red was presented the WBTV Jefferson Award in 1986.

He was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Gastonia. He was a member of King Solomon Lodge #704 A.F. & A.M., the York Rite Bodies of Gas-tonia, and the Crowders Mountain Shrine Club.

Survivors include a son, a daughter, 6 grandchildren, 5 great and several nieces and nephews.

Interment with Masonic rites will follow in Olney Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
