Melvin Frank Harvey, August 4, 1938 - July 12, 2010, passed away at his home in Woodlawn, Tennessee where he has lived for the past 9 years. Melvin was born in Fulton, Michigan and spent most of his life living in the Sherwood, Athens and Leonidas Michigan area. He's a graduate of Athens High School. Shortly after High School he got a job working at Post Cereals in Battle Creek, Michigan. He retired from Post after 36 and a half years mostly working in the trucking department driving semi. Also while at Post he did remodeling and construction on the side. This became a full time endeavor after retiring from Post. He was one of ten children born to the late George and Gladys Harvey. Melvin was married to Phyllis (Main) Harvey, in October of 1960. This year would have marked their 50th anniversary together. He was preceded in death by his son David. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; sons, Daniel, Richard, John Matthew; and his daughter Michelle. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Melvin loved life but he especially loved Jesus. He was quick to tell you about a miracle he'd just seen or heard about. He'd give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He was a hard worker and took great pride in the work he did. He was generous, courageous and never content to sit in a rocking chair and watch the world go by. He loved to tell stories and make people laugh. He was the best of friends and the kind of guy everyone wishes they had in their life. He will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, gifts and donations should be sent to www.heifer.org. This organization was one of Melvins' favorites to help end hunger in the world. So please consider a donation to this ministry in his honor. Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation from 6-8 pm Thursday July 15, 2010 at the Spencer Family Funeral Home located at 310 South Capital Avenue, (M-66 Hwy). Athens, MI 49011. Funeral service will be Friday, July 16th at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Burr Oak Cemetery on West Burr Oak Street in Athens. Melvin's son Reverend Daniel Harvey will be conducting the funeral services. Arrangements by Spencer Family Funeral Home, Athens.
