Toby was born in Odessa, TX on January 27, 1935. He passed away in Rockwall, Texas on Thursday, November 5, 2015 after an extended illness.
Joe was given the nickname Toby when he was a young boy. Most people only know him as Toby.
As a young man, he worked with his father at Bates Construction Company, where he learned skills that served him well in many projects over the years. He graduated from Odessa High School in 1953 and joined the US Marine Corp in December of that year. He served in Korea.
In 1967, Toby became the owner of Odessa Bumper Exchange and Supply. After retiring from running this business, he and his brothers, Johnny and James, worked together at Reliable Air Conditioning.
On February 6, 2001, he married Myrna Ruth Choate. In 2009, together with their dogs “Spot” and “Sister”, they remodeled a house at Lake Thomas.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe Bailey Bates Sr. and Fannie Bell (Waddell) Bates, and his brothers: John Walter Bates and James Keith Bates.
