Stella Nictune Hamilton, 75, born June 30, 1940, to Oscar Nictune and Cora (Tobuk) Nictune in Alatna, Alaska. She passed away July 26, 2015, in Seward, Alaska with her family by her side. She fought a long battle with Alzheimer's and dementia, but never lost her love for life.

Stella was the youngest surviving child, and did everything to keep up with the brother. If that meant running through the woods with a slingshot and climbing trees, she was right there along side Oscar Jr. She lost her mother at a very early age, so her older sisters stepped in to help their father in raising her. In being the youngest, she grew up side by side with her nieces and nephews, which created a more of a sibling bond with them, than being their aunt.

She had many nieces, and nephews, but somehow made them all feel special in their own ways.
As a teenager, she went to boarding school. She attended Wragell and Mt. Edgecumbe. During her life she achieved many great things. She was an LPN, weather observer, wildland firefighter, ran a store and post office, dog musher, housekeeper, fisherman, and ran the patient hostel in Fairbanks.

Stella married Sandy Hamilton, of Brewster, Washington, May 20, 1970. They loved living the subsistence lifestyle, and went on many traveling adventures together. They raised four children together, and taught them how to survive in the woods or in the city. Both were very independent, and headstrong, they went their separate ways, but never lost the love for each other.

Stella went back to college and graduated with a BA in Rural Development when she was 55. She moved back to Alatna, where she always wanted to be, and continued to live there until she was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's.

No matter where life took her, or where she ended up, she loved to dance, cook, bake, do beadwork and go berry picking. She was an expert card player, and gave the men a run for their money. Above all she was an amazing mother.

She was preceded in death by her parents Cora and Oscar, sisters Elma Sam, Bertha Moses, Clara Nictune, brothers, Wallace, Oscar Jr, Freddie, and Baby boy Nictune.

She is survived by her children, Patrick Harrison, Nicky Hashbarger, Theodore Nictune, Stewart Hamilton, Charles Jeffries, Nouyak Hamilton, and Cora Hamilton; her grandchildren, Melanie, Kristine, Jessica, Isabellah, Tassiana, Jamesen, Tyler, Kyana, Tieranny, Daniel, Jimi, Xander and Finnick; and her sisters, Elizabeth Fleagle, Ann Edwards, and Kitty David.

She lived a full life and was loved by many. Her kindness and laughter will live on.

The family would like to thank the staff at Providence Seward Mountain Haven for taking such special care of Stella the last years of her life. We couldn't have asked for a better place to take care of her.

Services were held on July 31, 2015, at the David Salmon Tribal Hall, and then she was laid to rest in Alatna, Alaska next to her brother, Oscar Jr., on August 1, 2015. Published in Daily News-Miner on Sept. 8, 2015
