Louis S. Sims Sr., of Waco, Texas, passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015. Services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with the Rev. Riley Armstead, the Rev. Lonnie Garrett and Prof. Brandon Quarles officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel
Louis joined the Marines in 1963. He ended up serving four years, receiving an honorable discharge in 1967. He was in command of 35 men when he was wounded in combat at Chu Lai on Christmas Day 1965.
Shot in the thigh, his men carried him to safety; he was sent home to recover and then returned to Vietnam once he was cleared for duty. He retired as an E-5 sergeant with a Purple Heart, a Combat Action Ribbon, a National Defense Service Medal and a Vietnam Campaign Medal.
