Mrs. Jewel Marie Kelley Cuchens Hughes was born on February 26, 1932, south of DeFuniak Springs, Florida. She died at the age of 83 on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, at the Twin Cities Hospital in Niceville, Florida.

The Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, November 5, from 10:00-10:45 a.m. at Rosemont Baptist Church in Niceville. The Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Ernest Walker officiating. Burial will take place at the Hatcher Cemetery in Freeport.

Jewel was preceded in death by her first husband of 50-plus years, Roy Emory Cuchens; her parents, Homer and Mary Lou Kelley; five brothers, Pete Kelley, Aubrey Kelley, Ottis Kelley, Arthur Kelley, and Homer Hayes Kelley; and, one sister, Margie Carroll.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Hughes, of Niceville, Florida; three sons, Ken Cuchens of Valparaiso, Florida, Randy (Susan) Cuchens of Newton, Mississippi, Roy (Chris) Cuchens of Choctaw Beach, Florida; six grandchildren, Kristin (Jeremy) Cuzzourt, Carrie (Kurt) Wilson, Marykathrine (Jim) Aiken, Jennifer (Jason) Wooten, Jessica (Josh) Jefcoat, and Brandon (Casey) Sadler; and nine great-grandchildren!

She is also survived by three sisters, Emmie Schuster, Betty Mikles, and Joyce Garrett; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as several other family members.
She was a born-again child of God and dearly loved Jesus. For many years, she sang in the Choir at First Baptist Church, Valparaiso, and also served in various roles through the WMU. She certainly loved her present church family at Rosemont Baptist Church in Niceville and loved being with them whenever possible.

She especially loved spending time with her family and dearly loved each one of them. She was a great cook and among the family favorites was her tomato gravy, potato salad, and banana pudding!

Jewel stayed at home raising three boys in the early years of her marriage to Roy and later was employed at Piggly Wiggly in Niceville and Vanguard Bank in Valparaiso.


In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that you give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering through Rosemont Baptist Church.
