Agnes "Mattie" Kusmak, 88, died peacefully on January 30, 2012 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
Agnes was born May 29, 1923 in Moose Lake, the daughter of Albert and Pauline (Obraski) Matuseski. She graduated from Moose Lake High School in 1941.
Mattie entered nurse's training in 1942 at St. Michael's Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota and joined the United States Cadet Nurse Corps in 1943. She graduated from nursing school in 1945 and worked three months at the Moose Lake State Hospital before moving to Thief River Falls and beginning work at St. Luke's Hospital.
It was in Thief River Falls where she met Theodore Kusmak, whom she married on June 19, 1947 in Moose Lake. The couple lived in Thief River Falls until moving to Alexandria in 1968. While in Alexandria, Mattie worked in surgery at Douglas County Hospital and was also a charge nurse at the hospital.
Mattie was always a very self-reliant person and continued to be so after the death of her husband in 2001. She was known as an accomplished seamstress in Alexandria and made many clothes for her children. She continued to do alterations up until her last days. Mattie also loved to bake and do crossword puzzles. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a very faithful churchgoer.
She is survived by her children, Mike (Carmen) Kusmak of Tularosa, NM, Peg (Dalton) Anderson of Redwood Falls, Paul (Linda) Kusmak of Alexandria, and Ann (Chris) Sharp of Boerne, TX; grandchildren, Adam Kusmak, Jacob Kusmak, Benjamin Kusmak, Eric Melcher, Rebecca Giacomi, Steven Anderson, Ross Anderson, Darwin Anderson, Hunter Kusmak, Alexandra Sharp and Jack Sharp; brother, Lawrence Matuseski of Moose Lake; sisters, Cecelia Johnson of Ventura, CA and Margaret Heiser of Baltimore.
Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Peter, Donald, Joe, David, Eddie and Ted; and sisters, Sister Sophia and Lucy.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, February 3 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria. Entombment was at St. Mary's Cemetery Mausoleum with Michael Kusmak, Paul Kusmak, Eric Melcher, Jacob Kusmak, Jack Sharp and Hunter Kusmak serving as pallbearers.
Arrangements are with Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
