Taught school when a young man, and later in Illinois. He married March 24, 1852, Sarah B. Britton. They resided in Honey Creek, IL, where his uncle, John Carpenter also resided, but returned East in 1853 and was living at No. 106 (Surry map from book); the following year he was Superintendant of Schools in Surry, NH, while being employed in the mill at No. 112. Subsequently he and his brother John ran a saw and grist mill at Cuttingsville, VT, after which he returned west. In the fall of 1861 he enlisted as a private in Co. K 11th Regt., Wisconsin Vols. He rose to the rank of 1st lieut. and was staff office for two years. He was with Gen. US Grant through the siege of Vicksburg. After serving nearly four years with impaired health he resigned and was discharged. He settled in Belle Plaine, WI, where he served as town clerk, etc. In 1861 he was res. of Neenah, WS.
