W.C. was the son of John M. and Ruth (Carpenter) Adams. His father died when he was eleven years old and he (as well as his mother) lived for many years in the household of his brother John and his sister-in-law, Julia, in Walpole.

By 1871 the family had moved to Missouri where W.C. met and married Joanna "Anna" Davis on March 23, 1871 in Caldwell County, Missouri. Over the few years that they were together before Joanna's death, they had two sons: Samuel J. and William Adams.

Following Joanna's death he married Mary Davis on June 10, 1876 while they were still living in Caldwell Co., Missouri. It isn't known, at this time, if Mary was a relative of Joanna's. W.C. and Mary had two children: Morrison Carpenter Adams and Bonnie Frances Adams.

By the 1910 census, the Adams were living in Rushville, Phillips, Kansas where W.C. continued his lifetime work as a farmer.
