James Thomas Crawford Marshall was born in Burt, Taughboyne Parish, County Donegal, Ireland, and is the son of William Marshall and Jane (Crawford) Marshall. The family emigrated to the United States from Ireland, arriving in New Orleans on November 27, 1850 and settling near Carthage, Hancock County, Illinois in January 1851. He married Eliza Jane Curry on February 13, 1865. They farmed in Carthage Township, Hancock County, Illinois until their deaths, raising a family of 10 children, one of whom died as an infant. There is a known discrepancy between his birth and death dates as given in his obituary and census data and those listed on the tombstone which was set many years after his death.
