Motor racing driver, Team Manager and Team owner. Born in Derby, he began racing in 1935 although his racing licence was withdrawn after a serious accident at Silverstone when another driver was seriously injured. After WW2 he began to race a Maserati and an ERA particularly on the continent and was invited to race a works Alfa Romeo 158 at the very first British GP in 1950, finishing an excellent 3rd. In 1951 he drove the Ferrari 'Thinwall Special' to a 4th place at Reims but had a less happy association with the problematic BRM cars. He rarely raced in World Championship events again but gained successes in other major races. After 1954 he retired from racing to manage the Aston Martin team, and later the Yeoman Credit/Bowmaker and R.P.Parnell Racing teams. He unexpectedly developed peritonitis after a routine appendix operation and died at the age of 52yrs.
