Helene Tonetta Gosselink was born on September 29, 1924, south of Otley, Iowa. She was the daughter of John Henry and Kathryn (Keuning) Gosselink. Helene was named after her two grandmothers, Helena (Vander Beek) Gosselink and Trintje (Hansum) Keuning. Helene attended the Liberty Corner Country School near Otley, after which she graduated from Pella Christian High School in Pella, Iowa in 1942. It was during high school that she met and dated Wilbur Roy (Bud) Ver Meer. On September 10, 1946, they were united in marriage at the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella and to this union three children were born: their son, Jay Allen and twin girls, Jana Kay and Janie Lee. Helene made profession of her faith, was married and had all three of their children baptized at the First Christian Reformed Church. Before she was married, and for some time following, she worked at Wilson’s Jewelry Store in Pella. In 1954, while living in Des Moines, Iowa, Bud made the decision to enter into the ministry. Helene and Bud moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan with their three young children. He attended Calvin College for five years and graduated from Calvin Theological Seminary in 1962. During this time, Helene received a PHT degree, meaning “pushing hubby through”. Until all of the children were in school, she did baby sitting, gave piano lessons after school and cleaned dentist offices at night. She then began working as manager/clerk at the concession stand at Calvin College and continued doing this the remainder of the time Bud was in seminary. The first church they were called to serve was the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Fulton, Illinois. Following this pastorate, they served the Archer Avenue Christian Reformed Church in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to being the pastor’s wife, Helene worked for several years in the Medical Records Department at Christ Community Hospital in Oaklawn, Illinois. From there they moved to Colton, South Dakota where she was employed at the Dell Rapids Medical Clinic in Dell Rapids and after moving to Sparta, Michigan and subsequently to Cedar Springs, Michigan, she was employed at W. J. Dykstra Company in Grand Rapids. Due to Rev. Ver Meer’s health problems, he was forced to retire in 1976. He had battled cancer since 1966 and in 1978 they decided to move back to their home town, Pella, Iowa. From October, 1978 until August, 1987, Helene was employed as office secretary for the Pella Chamber of Commerce. On November 8, 1985, Bud succumbed to his illness at the age of 63 years. To fill some of her retirement hours, Helene worked part time at Hilltop Manor North, from November, 1987 until June, 1993. For several years she enjoyed working at Van Dyk- Duven Funeral Home. Helene liked to stay busy and was involved in volunteer work at the Pella Community Hospital and Nursing Home and at the First Christian Reformed Church. Music was always very important in her life. She had taught piano lessons to children for many years and was a church organist for 34 years, beginning at age 14. She also devoted much time helping with her grandsons, Bradley Van Dyk and Adam Ver Meer with their special needs. This led to involvement with the ARC and Christian Opportunity Center Volunteer Corps. Helene also enjoyed crocheting, sewing, crafts and traveling. Helene made the wise decision to move into the Pella Manor in January of 1988, where she lived happily until she became a resident in the Long Term Care Unit at the Pella Regional Health Center. In January, 2014, she became a resident in Groningen at The Cottages in Pella where she passed away Thursday morning, September 24, 2015, just prior to her 91st birthday. Helene is survived by her three children and their families: Jay and Edith (Kapteyn) Ver Meer of Hudsonville, Michigan; Jana and Gerald (Obie) Van Dyk of Pella, Iowa; Janie Ver Meer of Grandville, Michigan. Of her original family Helene leaves her brother, Robert J. Gosselink, her sister-in-law, Josie (Howard) Gosselink and Lorena (Robert Gosselink) Vos of Pella; along with the following sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Bertha (Ver Meer) Brouwer of Pella, Ruth (Ver Meer) and Dick Stravers of Holland, Michigan, Bel (Ver Meer) and Dale Vos of Pella; and several nieces and nephews.
