Joseph was born in Waterloo Twp; in 1839 to parents Dennis Devitt (1813-1880) and Magdalena Keller (1819-1896).

1861 census of Berlin Village. 22 years old.
1871 census of Berlin Town. 31 years old.

On February 02nd, 1864, Joseph married Mary Ann Hoffman in Waterloo County. Marriage Microfilm #1030066.

They were the parents of 4 daughters all born in Berlin.
1. Martha Rebecca Devitt 1867-1947.
2. Sarah "Emmaretta" Devitt 1870-1933.
3. Angeline Matilda Devitt 1872-1901.
4. Mary Ann Devitt 1874-
