Wayne M. Shurley, 94, of Frontenac, passed away at 11:46 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Via Christi Hospital.
He was born on May 11, 1921 at Montevallo, Missouri, the son of Marion and Goldia (Wilkins) Shurley.
Mr. Shurley served with the Deadeye Division, 96th Infantry, Pacific Theatre, in the United States Army during World War II, before being honorably discharged on January 18, 1946.
On January 16, 1948, he was united in marriage to Carmen D. Runnels at Pittsburg.
Mr. Shurley was an ordained minister with the Church of the Nazarene where he served as pastor and associate pastor for thirty years, retiring in 1996. He also worked for the State of Kansas as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. After retirement Mr. Shurley also pastored at Via Christi Village.
He was a two time cancer survivor.
He is survived by his wife, Carmel D. Shurley; a son, Steve W. Shurley and his wife, Kimberly of Spring Hill, KS; a daughter, Gwen D. Kazmierski and her husband, John of Frontenac; a brother, Gene Shurley of Wichita, KS; three sisters, Beryl Harris of Ft. Scott, KS, Glennice L. Wirt of Wichita, KS, Joan Main of Wichita, KS; five grandchildren, Jarett Smith, Malinda Bailey and her husband, Eric, Jennifer Troutman and her husband, Mike, Aaron Grunden and his wife, Lacey, and Paul Grunden and his wife, Misti; a great-granddaughter, Avery Smith-Perez and eight additional great-grandchildren; and a dear friend and caretaker, Keith Williams.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Vernal D. Shurley, and a sister, Wava E. Warford.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday (Nov 2) at the First Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Jim Sukraw officiating.
Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the National Cemetery at Fort Scott, Kansas with the Army Military Funeral Honors providing graveside military services.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Brenner Mortuary, where friends may call after 10:00 a.m. Sunday.
The family requests that memorials be given to Angels Among Us. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.
