Johanes Halvorsen was the second known son of Halvor Josephsen (aka Josefsen) and Kirstine Pedersdatter He was born 1 Feb 1823 in Norway, while his parents lived on the Moe (or Mo) Farm near Ringsaker. (note: the headstone has the wrong birthdate. The correct birthdate is found in the Norwegian Parish Records)

Johanes left the Moe farm in 1848 and moved to the Steenburg farm in Furnes. On 6 Nov 1848, in Furnes, Hedmark, Johanes married Helvik Hansdatter. (b. 24 Jun 1823 in Vang, Norway) They are shown in the 1965 census as living in Vang, where all their children except Joseph were born. Joseph was born in Hamar, which means the family moved there betweeen 1857 and 1861.

By 1869, when they emigrated to the US, they were living in Nord Hange Holen. They had six known children, one of whom (Halvor) died in Norway the year they left. Johanes was a "snekkerhagen" (a carpenter) in Norway, and he liked the "hagen" part of the name. He and his wife thus decided to take the last name "Hagen" after reaching the US and most of his children followed suit. From one source, Johanes and Helvik were believed to have taken a cruise to visit the US and then decided to stay. However, they are shown as emigrants leaving from Storhamar via Oslo April 22, 1869, accompanied by Hans (Henry), Josef (Joseph), and Hanne (Hannah), to use the Norwegian names.

Johanes and Helvik lived for a short time with friends in Lacrosse, Wisconsin. Then, in 1870, they homesteaded what became the Hagen home farm which was located about 8 miles south and a little west of Osseo, Wisconsin. Daughter Christiane (Christiana) Johanesda arrived in 1872. Daughter Ellen is thought to have arrived the same year. Johanes and Helvik donated land from their farm to the Lutheran Church, and today the Elk Creek (AKA Hale) Cemetery, adjacent to the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, stands on what was initially Hagen homestead land.

Johanes and Helvik spent the rest of their lives working their farm, with the help principally of son Joseph and family. Helvik died June 25, 1903 and Johanes died 3 Jan 1912. Both are buried in the Elk Creek Cemetery their gift made possible. From the hilltop cemetery, one can still see in the valley below the windmill where their farmhouse stood.
