William Monroe "Bill" Spivey, 88 of Sanford peacefully passed away Sunday October 18, 2015. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Tuesday at White Hill Presbyterian Church with Reverend Brown Patton officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Bill was born in the Johnsonville, NC area on November 3, 1926 to John Byrd Spivey and Christian Clyde Smith Spivey. He served the US Navy in the Pacific during WWII, and afterward spent his career as a tobacconist, traveling and buying tobacco for several tobacco companies. Bill was a life-long member of White Hill Presbyterian Church, where he served as a member of the Session, Clerk of Session, President of Men of the Church, and sang in the Choir. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 57 years, Iris McFadyen Spivey, who predeceased his in 2007. Bill was also a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Bill is survived by three sons, Stephen Monroe Spivey of Raleigh, John Michael Spivey of Sanford, and Gregory McFadyen Spivey of Winston Salem; four granddaughters, Jillian Caddell (Joe), Meredith Spivey, Johnna Spivey and Anna Spivey, and a great grandson, Jack William Caddell. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Iris, parents, John Byrd Spivey and Christian Clyde Smith Spivey, sisters, Myrtle Medlin, Mary Wooten, Elsie Godfrey, and Mae Carden; brothers, Carl, Raymond, Herbert, Roy, and Russell Spivey. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1836 Doctors Dr., Sanford, NC 27330; or to White Hill Presbyterian Church, 3301 white Hill Rd., Sanford, NC 27332.
