Edgar Oliver Aasness was born December 22, 1926 in Bottineau, ND, son of Laura Kittleson and Oscar O. Aasness. He attended elementary and high school in Bottineau and spent his summers in the Turtle Mountains at his uncle’s farm.
Edgar enlisted in the US Navy in 1942. He was on a ship 30 miles out from Japan when Hiroshima was bombed. Later, he was stationed near where the treaty was signed in Pearl Harbor. At one time, he served on the ship, Ticonderoga, as the signalman. He with Barbara were privileged to fly to Washington, DC on one of the Roughrider Honor Flights with about 97 other WWII Veterans.
Following his service in the Navy, Ed drove a moving truck for the City of San Francisco. He met Barbara Wruck in Broadus, MT. They were married in Belle Fourche, SD on July 26, 1968. For a time, Edgar worked in the oil fields in South Dakota and Montana, walking the pipeline to check for leaks and chase rattlesnakes out of the pipes.
Their first and only child, Laura Audrey, died 12 hours after she was born on June 3, 1969 while Edgar was working in Belle Creek, MT. Later, moving to Miles City he worked for the State of Montana as a counselor at the Pine Hills School for boys. They lived there for six or seven years, and then moved to Salt Lake City, UT.
Ed worked for Winder Dairy as milk delivery man. Eventually, he formed his own company, providing the same service. He and Barbara also sold artwork from town to town throughout the Midwest.
When Ed retired, he and Barbara made their home in Bottineau, ND. In 1999, they moved to Mandan, to be close to and work in the Bismarck Temple of the Church of Latter-day Saints.
Edgar was known for his wit and sense of humor. When there was a twinkle in his eye, the words he spoke had to be taken with a grain of salt. He made others feel immediately at ease with his quick mind and ready hospitality.
Edgar is preceded in death by his parents, Laura and Oscar Aasness; infant daughter, Laura Audrey; brothers, Norman and Raymond Aasness; sister, Constance Tharaldson. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; Barbara’s daughter, Pamela (Timothy) Hall their sons, Derek (Christine) and Blake (Kelly) and Ed’s granddaughter, Larissa.
Ed passed away in his home on Friday, October 23, 2015. Funeral services will be held at the Bismarck LDS Church, 1500 Country West Road at 10:30 am Wednesday, October 28, 2015 with burial at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery at 1:00 pm.
