He was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, serving as chalis bearer and vestryman. He was one of the longest-serving lay readers at the church.
He was a member of the Battle Creek Kiwanis Club since 1942 and served as president of the club in 1949. He was a member of the American Red Cross and was active in the Civil Defense Program in Battle Creek during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, the former Isabella "Ella" Ferguson; a son, Robert J. Thranert of Joplin, Mo.; three grandchildren and five sisters.Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
