Born Jennie Myrtle Shaw and nicknamed Mertie Jennie Shaw, she was the daughter of John W. Shaw and Emma Ann McClish.

Mertie Shaw married Edward T. Norman, son of John Norman and Rachel Meek, on January 30, 1896, in Montpelier, Williams County, Ohio; they were married until his death on January 31, 1917. The couple had no children together.

Myrtie [sic-Mertie] Norman married George Louis ("Louie") Walker, son of William Walker and Mary Frances Powell, on August 8, 1918, in Lakeview, Montcalm County, Michigan; they were married until his death on May 1, 1931. The couple had no children together.

In the obituary of Mertie's sister, Donia (Shaw) Albright, who died on December 22, 1953, "a sister, Mertie Walker of Lakeview, Mich." was listed as a survivor.

"MRS. MERTIE WALKER DIES, RITES FRIDAY
Mertie Walker, 74, widow of Louie Walker, died Wednesday afternoon at the Mecosta Memorial Hospital, Stanwood. She formerly lived 1 mile east of Altona.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at the Youngman Funeral Home here at 10 o'clock, with burial in Ashley, Indiana."

"Mrs. Mertie J. Walker, born Oct. 7, 1875 at Pleasant Lake, Ind., passed away very suddenly July 20th, 1955 at the Mecosta Memorial Hospital at Stanwood, Mich., at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 13 days. ....
Funeral services were held Friday forenoon at Youngman Funeral Home at Lakeview and burial in cemetery near Ashley, Ind. Rev. Carl Ruble officiated.
Mr. and Mrs. Walker came here about 37 years ago and purchased the farm of the late Mr. Harry Leng and Mrs. Leng, who lives at Greenville [Montcalm County]. Mr. Walker passed away in 1931."
