In a letter written on 8 Jan 1854 by his brother William to their brother Samuel in California, William writes "Brother Byan [sic] departed this life about one week ago having lingered under severe affliction in his lungs for six weeks." He also notes the death of a child of Bryan previously unrecorded-- "His youngest son named Samuel died of the same complaint about three weeks before he did."
