The son of George & Elizabeth (Longnecker) Strohm, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in West Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Newville, Cumberland County, June 20, 1863, mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 26 as a private with Co. F, 1st Pennsylvania (Ramsey's) Battalion, and honorably discharged with his company January 9, 1864.

He moved west soon thereafter and married Anna Grove July 13, 1865, in Chicago, Illinois, fathering Clara Etta (b. 09/08/65), Adda L. (b. 1869), Elmer B. (b. 08/??/72), Bert LeRoy (b. 04/30/76), George (b. 12/26/79), and John Herbert (b. 12/17/81). At the birth of his first child, he lived in DuPage County, Illinois, by 1885 had moved in Ida County, Iowa, and by 1910 resided in Umatilla County, Oregon.
