She is a neat attractive, petite little lady with a modest, reserved manner, and looking at her today it's easy to believe that in her college days she was a beauty queen - 1924 Football Queen at East Central State University. She was next to the youngest of seven children (5 boys and 2 girls) and the granddaughter of a Texas Senator. She had what was unusual at that time - a college educated mother -and in her lifetime she has seen transportation go from the wagons in which she rode as a girl to the spacecraft that sent a man to the moon. Her family had its first radio when she was a teenager - a huge contraption compared to today's miniatures and she herself went from riding in a surrey to flying on a jet.

A native Texan, she moved with her family to Ada, OK while she was in elementery school. Her father was a traveling salesman who worked for a hardware company. He and his family remained in Ada until Evelyn graduated from High School and went to college. After graduation from college Evelyn taught school in Duncan OK and Sapulpa OK. Fate finally took her to Wilson OK where she met and fell in love with the handsome young history teacher and coach, Joe Clement. She says she and Joe didn't exactly elope they just "went to Texas and got married without telling anybody". Joe died just a month before their 50th wedding anniversary. The young couple soon moved to Ardmore, OK where Joe began a long association with the Boy Scouts. They came to Chickasha in 1942.
Evelyn remembers how her husband would stand on the front porch and give a piercing whistle and "little boy scouts would come running from everywhere".
In fact, Evelyn, a reserved modest women was more inclined to talk about her husband than herself. She turned him from a Baptist into a Presbyterian - and a very good Presbyterian at that! He was an elder, Supt. of Sunday School and at one time the only layman Moderator of a Presbyterian Synod. Evelyn was active in the Business and Professional Women's group of the church.
She was a working mother in a time when working women were undeniably underpaid, but when she told her boss she was paying a woman more to clean her house than she was making he gave her a raise so that she could make at least as much as her cleaning lady.
Evelyn says she feels her greatest accomplishment in life has been her children Joe Jr., V. P. of his Tulsa firm, John who at present is Executive Presbter of Black Hawk Presbytery in Illinois and JoAnn Dekinder - she of the beautiful singing voice -"a talent gotten from her grandmother, not me" says Evelyn.
Evelyn's children remember her as a fun mother. Their house was the scene of many parties and a popular gathering place for all their friends. Slumber parties were frequent occasions and it wasn't at all unusal to roll up the rug in the dining room to provide a dance floor. And anytime the children were involved in school or church activities their parents were there.
Her children will always remember her "Mama Candy" a special fudge which was always waiting for them on Christmas morning. Sometimes it meant she worked into the night on Chritmas Eve to get it done but it was always there!
Evelyn has given the world 3 children, 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and on the great great grandchildren she has lost count. Not a bad legacy for her to leave and one of which she can be justfiably proud.
