Professional Hockey Player, Coach. Roberts, born James Wilfred Roberts, was a defenseman for the National Hockey League's Montreal Canadiens (1963 to 1967, 1971 to 1977) and St. Louis Blues (1967 to 1971, 1977). After playing minor league hockey for a few seasons, he signed with the Montreal Canadiens of the NHL and started his professional career in 1963. Roberts helped lead the Canadiens to two Stanley Cup titles before being selected by the St. Louis Blues in the 1967 NHL expansion draft. He was a solid player for the Blues for five seasons (was named team captain his last year with the team), before being traded back to Montreal in 1971. Roberts helped the Canadiens win three more Stanley Cups before rejoining the Blues in 1977. He retired after the 1977 season and would later serve as head coach in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres, St. Louis Blues, and Hartford Whalers. Roberts played in three NHL All-Star games during his career (1965, 1969, and 1970).
