Ambassador, Governor and Author. Lord William Loftus was born in Bristol and served as charge d'affaires in Berlin, Germany from 1853 to 1858 and as an Ambassador in 1866. He was Ambassador in St Petersberg, Russia from 1871 to 1878 and in 1879 was appointed Governor and Commander-in-Chief of New South Wales. He left Sydney in 1887, and wrote four volumns of "Diplomatic Reminiscences" which were published in London. He died at Wood Cottage, near Ascot, England.
