Gloria A. Cowardin, 74, of Startup, WA, passed away on January 9, 2009.
Gloria was born May 5, 1934, in Seattle, WA. She attended Maple Leaf Elementary School in Seattle and graduated from Queen Anne High School, also in Seattle, in 1952.
Growing up, she spent seventeen summers at a salmon cannery in Alaska with her parents. It was on one of these summers that she met her future husband, Chuck. Following Chuck's service in the U.S. Navy, they were reacquainted and married on June 25, 1955. They resided in Seattle and Kirkland, WA, until 1964, when they moved to Startup to raise their five children.
Gloria loved the Skykomish Valley and made many long-lasting friendships. She often stated that following her move here, she felt like she had come home. She and Chuck were active in the Sky Valley Little League for eight years and in addition to getting the team from game to game, she could be found keeping the scorebook and even coaching on many occasions. She supported all her children's school activities including sports, band and drama. She became an avid Seattle Mariners fan and all other activities ceased during game time. During any October you probably would not find her at home because she would be deer hunting in the Sultan Basin. Gloria truly loved the time she spent on the "Hill" and was a very successful hunter. She took painting lessons from a local artist and continued that hobby for many years. Many of her paintings reflected the love she had for hunting and the outdoors.
She enjoyed traveling and had the opportunity to visit Japan, Guam, Hong Kong, Germany and France. Her most memorable visits were to the U.S. WWII cemeteries at Normandy, France. Gloria also enjoyed watching the sunsets at the Lakeshore Apartments in Oroville, WA, which she and Chuck have operated since 1990.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Olga Williams.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Chuck, of Startup; sons, Mike and wife, Linda, of Wenatchee, WA, Jim, of Startup, John, of Wenatchee, and Jeff and wife, Ammie, of Snohomish, WA; and daughter, Kristi and partner, Ginette, of Startup. She had four grandchildren, Emily, Shelby, Jeremy and Stephanie.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at P.A.T.H.S., Snohomish County Hospice and the Western Washington Medical Group Oncology Department.
An open house Celebration of Life will be held from 1 to 5 p.m., on January 24, 2009, at the VFW Hall, 301 3rd ST, Gold Bar, WA. Refreshments and light snacks will be served.
In lieu of flowers, Gloria asked that any remembrances be made to "no-kill" animal shelters or Pasodo's Safe Haven. -
