Emma S. Jensen was born in Hayward Township, Freeborn County Minnesota on 17 April 1889 to Peter and Amelia G. (Larsen) Jensen. She was one of 18 children born to his marriage and one of only ten who survived to adulthood.

She attended District 35 school in Freeborn County and the Naeve Hospital School of Nursing, from which she was a 1921 graduate,

Working as a surgical nurse, she had been involved with the treatment of both of Alfred's previous wives, Mathilda and Sena. Alfred's decision to marry her caused friction with the Pfahning family and a deterioration of his relationship with them. The Pfahnings did not consider Sena to have been a good mother to Mathilda's children. In marrying Sena's sister Emma, Alfred was thought to be displaying bad judgement.

But she was very good to her step-children and, according to Mrs. Lucille Stewart, she "was good to Dad, did everything she could to make him happy." Emma and Alfred were married 21 October 1936.

She and Alfred were members of Calvary Baptist Church in Albert Lea.

Emma died on 6 May 1968 at Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea following surgery; surviving her husband by six years. She was 79.
