Imo Inez Cates Navin, age 100, of Marysville, died Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at Carriage Court Assisted Living in Marysville.

A homemaker, she was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Marysville, where she served as elder, deacon, was a Sunday school teacher and participated with the Presbyterian Women’s Association.

She was a 1932 graduate of Meeker High School in Marion County and received a teaching degree from Bowling Green State University in 1934. She was an elementary school teacher in Marion County following graduation.

She was a member of Windsor and Community Seniors and the Windsor Singers. Early in her family’s life, she was involved with her children’s activities and served as a cub scout and 4-H leader. She was active with the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association and the old Polio Foundation in Magnetic Springs. She was a member of Hannah, Dustin, Emerson Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. She and her family were named by the chapter as an “Ohio First Family.” Her family was the namesake for Navin Elementary School in Marysville. She was a member of Twig 1 with Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and helped with Mobile Meals.

She enjoyed reading, sewing, playing cards, handicrafts and playing the piano.

She was born April 21, 1915 in Marion County to the late Claude Lacy and Edna Valeria Irvine Cates. She was also predeceased by her husband, Thomas William Navin, whom she married May 16, 1936 in Fort Wayne, IN; three daughters, Mary Kay Navin, Jo Lynn Navin Shearer and Cheryl Ann “Cherie” Navin Schleeter; her siblings, Madeline Dietsch, Forest Cates, Lowell Cates and Mabel Rhoads; two sons-in-law, Lary “Red” Shearer and Billy Schleeter; and a granddaughter-in-law, Pam Dodd Railsback.

She is survived by two sons, Conrad “Connie” (Sandra) Navin of Wake Forest, NC and Dan (Carol) Navin of Marysville; her grandchildren, Whitney Dawson, Will (Noelle) Shearer, Stacey Halpin, Brad (Rhiannon) Navin, Cynthia (Timothy) Ambrose, Chad Navin, Dirk (Meg) Railsback, Rex (Tina) Railsback, Andrea Navin and Bill (Beth) Navin; many great-grandchildren Ryan and Matthew Dawson, Jude, Joella and Jordan Shearer, Luke Halpin, Samuel, Frankie and Garrett Navin, Alexander and Benjamin Ambrose and Joel, Meghan and Brittney Railsback; nieces, nephews and other relatives

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Underwood Funeral Home. Rev. John M. Groat will officiate and interment will be held later at Claibourne Cemetery in Richwood. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church.
