She was born on August 23, 1917 in Marion, Ohio to the late Claude and Edna (Irvine) Cates. Mabel married Raymond L. Rhoads March 5, 1938. He preceded her in death on April 4, 1996. She was a member of Meeker United Methodist Church and the Ruth Artz Circle.
During her life time, Mabel worked for Marion Motor Products, Henney and Cooper, and B. F. Goodrich. But she was most famous for her pie making abilities and was known as the pie lady.
Surviving Mabel are her children, Myron, Alan (Beverly), Hal (Cathy) of Marion and Glen (Bobbie), and Holly (Mike) Pilo of Florida. She has twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. She is survived by a sister, Imo Navin.
Besides her parents and husband, Mabel was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Funeral services for Mabel will be Monday, January 19, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home. Officiating the service will be Rev. Christopher Wiseman. Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Sunday January 18, 2009 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Meeker United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
