Fred was the son of Harry Rollin Addington and Jennie May Patty, who married on 12 May 1900 in Randolph Co., Indiana. I found four children for the couple—Fred L. (13 Nov 1901), Curtis Benjamin (22 Mar 1908), Margaret Louise (14 Apr 1917), and an unidentified son which may have been Harold, born circa 1924.

I found the family on the 1910 Census, living in Marion Ward I, Grant Co., Indiana. Harry (enumerated as Roland) Addington, aged 29, was earning a living as a bookkeeper. Jennie, aged 28, reported that she had had two children, both of them still alive. Indeed, there with their parents were Fred, aged 8, and Curtis, aged 2.

The inscription "WWI PVT Indiana Cavalry" on Fred's headstone suggests he served during that conflict.

I was able to catch back up with the family on the 1920 Census, still living in Marion Township, Grant Co., Indiana. Harry, aged 39, was working as a bookkeeper in a motor factory. Jennie, aged 37, was home with their three children—Fred, aged 18, Curtis, aged 11, and Margaret, aged 2 years, 9 months.

Four years after that census, Fred married Gertrude A. Johnson on 31 May 1924 in Grant Co., Indiana. The couple would bring three daughters into this world—Norma Jean (21 Dec 1923 South Bend, IN), Esther Mae (2 Jun 1925 South Bend, IN), and Patricia Ann (circa 1935).

I found the family on the 1930 Census, the family had relocated to South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Fred, aged 28, was employed as a specification checker in an auto factory, likely Studebaker Corp. Gertrude, aged 25, was home with Norma, aged 6, and Esther, aged 4.

They were still living in South Bend when the 1940 Census came around. Fred, aged 38, was working as an assembler in an auto factory. Gertrude, aged 35, was keeping house. Still there with their parents were Norma, aged 16, Esther, aged 14, and Patricia, aged 5. Also living with the family was Jennie Addington, Fred's 58-year-old widowed mother, and 16-year-old Harold Addington, identified as Fred's son-in-law, which seems unlikely as they had the same surname. I think this may have been the aforementioned, unidentified son of Harry and Jennie Addington, making him Fred's brother.

Fred lived to age 67, departing this earth on 10 Apr 1969. I do not know Gertrude's fate. I did not find her stone next to Fred's.
