He was born on the 16th day of February, 1885, and is a son of Fred M. Kummerow, who brought the family to the United States in 1865, making the voyage on one of the old-time sailing vessels which was sixty days in reaching the American port. He continued his journey westward to Chicago, where he established his family. His son, Fred M. Kummerow, acquired his education in the German parochial schools and in 1882, when twenty-seven years of age, entered the undertaking business at what was then No. 533 West Chicago avenue. In 1895 he erected a new building at No. 1720 West Chicago avenue, the structure being twenty-five by one hundred and twenty-five feet. It is well arranged for the purpose and contains a chapel with a seating capacity of sixty. He makes his home at No. 2231 Walton street.
