Harry was one of the thirteen children born to Christian Daniel Phend and Mary Emily "Mollie" McConnell, who married on 24 Oct 1875 in Marshall Co., Indiana. Their children were: Clarence Delbert (24 Nov 1876), Marion Ora (25 Feb 1878) (dau.) Carrie L. (22 Dec 1879), Henry Delvin (Mar 1881), Harriet "Hattie" L. (26 Mar 1883), Harry Raymond (25 Sep 1884), Myrtle Iva (10 Mar 1886), Lillie Belle (28 Sep 1887), Ethel (18 Feb 1889), Grover (7 Jan 1891), Waldo Guy (27 Oct 1892), Clifford Lester (Jun 1895), and Mary M. (6 Feb 1904).

The family appeared on the 1880 Census, living in Scott Township, Kosciusko Co., Indiana. Christian (Christopher on the record), aged 29, was farming for a living. Mary, aged 17, was home with their three children—Clarence, aged 3, Marion (Warren on the record), aged 2, and Carrie, aged 6 months.

Because the 1890 Census was ordered destroyed after water damage following a fire at the National Archive, it is difficult to check in on a family that decade. More children joined the family, and on 27 Jan 1890, the family lost daughter Ethel a year shy of what would have been her first birthday.

By the time the 1900 Census came around, the family was living in Locke, Elkhart Co., Indiana. Christian, aged 49, was busy farming. Mary, aged 47, reported that she had had twelve children, but that only eleven had survived to that census, a sad reminder of the loss of daughter Ethel. There with their parents were the eleven surviving children—Clarence, aged 23, Marion (Oren on the record), aged 22, Carrie, aged 20, Delvin, aged 19, Hattie, aged 17, Harry, aged 15, Iva, aged 14, Belle, aged 12, Grover, aged 9, Waldo, aged 7, and Clifford, aged 4. Phew! I don't know how women managed a big family like this without electric washers and dryers.

On 11 Feb 1904, the family lost daughter and sister Carrie, who died on 11 Feb 1904 at age 24.

There were a number of marriages in the decade following the 1900 census. Son Clarence married wife Lora G., son Marion married Elizabeth J. Hofer on 24 Dec 1903 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, son Henry married Olive Mae Butterbaugh, daughter Hattie married John M. Rhoades on 30 Oct 1901, Myrtle married Franklin A. Wehrly on 26 Jul 1905 in Elkhart, and Lillie Belle married Alvin D. Milller on 30 Jun 1909.

The family was living on W. Walnut St. in Elkhart County when the 1910 Census was taken. Christian, aged 59, was still actively farming. Mary, aged 56, reported ten out of twelve children still alive. Only four children were still living at home with Christian and Mary—Harry, aged 25 and working as a lineman for the telephone company, Grover, aged 19 and helping on the family farm, and Clifford, aged 14. Also there was 6-year-old Mary Phend, identified as a daughter. As this child was not included in Mary's count, best guess is that she was a foster daughter or perhaps an adopted daughter. She may have also been a granddaughter.

Three years after that census, Harry married Mary L. Parker on 8 Oct 1913 in Marshall County, Indiana. The couple had two children together—daughter Mary Alice, born on 3 May 1915 and son Parker Hillis, born on 26 Apr 1918.

On his 11 Sep 1918 WWI draft card, Harry Raymond Phend, aged 32, reported his place of residence as Milford, Kosciusko Co., Indiana. He was working as a manager for Royal Telephone Company. Wife Mary was noted as next of kin. He was described as of medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair.

The family was living on West St. in Van Buren Township in Kosciusko County when the 1920 Census taker showed up with her notebook. Harry, aged 34, was still manager of the telephone company. Mary, aged 33, was home with Mary Alice, aged 4, and Parker, aged 1 year 8 months.

On 11 Mar 1927, Harry would have received the sad news of the death of his sister Mary Phend Reber at aged 23.

Harry and Mary were still living in Milford in Kosciusko County in 1930. Harry, aged 44, had switched occupations. By 1930, he was earning a living as a contractor of gravel roads. Mary, aged 43, was keeping house. Still at home with their parents were Mary, aged 14, and Parker, aged 11.

Just before the next census, Harry and Mary's daughter Mary Alice married Charles Edwin Remy on 1 Feb 1940 in Kosciusko County. Charles was the son of William Henderson Remy and Isabella Hughes.

Harry, Mary and Parker were still living in Milford when the 1940 Census was enumerated. Harry, aged 53, was still working as a contractor in road building. Mary, aged 53, noted that she had gone to college for a year before she married Harry. Parker, aged 21, noted two years of college under his belt.

On his WWII draft card, Harry, aged 56, reported that he was living in Milford, Indiana where he was earning a living as a self-employed contractor. Wife Mary was noted as his emergency contact. Harry measured in at 5' 10" tall, and weighed in at 180 lbs. His eyes were still blue, his hair still brown.

On 25 Jan 1943, Mary Alice's husband Charles Remy entered the Army. During WWII, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant with Co. C of the 328th Infantry's 26th Division. Sadly, in July of 1944, Charles was killed ten days after he led an infantry platoon to the front with General Patton's 3rd Army. He was only 28 years old. His remains were eventually returned to Indiana for burial in Indianapolis' Crown Point Cemetery.

Mary Alice didn't remarry until 1 Jun 1946, taking a second chance on love with Barnett William Koontz in a ceremony in Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana. Barnett was the son of Milton Irvin Koontz and Elnora Workman. A month earlier, Mary Alice's younger brother Parker had married Violett Amalia Gruenwald on 4 May 1946.

After thirty four years together, Harry lost wife Mary in 1947. He remarried a year later, exchanging vows with Inez Anglin (nee Wysong). Inez had previously married Everette T. Anglin in 1924, divorcing him in 1931 or 1932. City directories for South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana placed Harry in Milford, noted as the president of Elk Electrical Supply Inc.

In 1953, Harry, aged about 68, got into a 2-car collision he caused while trying to pass a tractor. He was fined, but no one was hurt in the crash. The following year, he was fined for speeding and reckless driving.

Harry and Inez had about 21 years together before Harry died nine days before Christmas on 16 Dec 1968 at age 82. Inez had him laid to rest next to first-wife Mary here in Oak Hill.
