The son of John & Susannah (Miller) McClain, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and blue eyes. He married Catherine Noel and fathered Mary Jane (b. 07/27/65), William (b. 11/26/66, d. 11/26/66), Francis (9/29/67, d. 11/26/68), Susan Elizabeth (b. 08/14/69), John Benjamin (b. 11/09/71), Vincent Joseph (b. 04/30/74), Robert (b. @1877), Ambrose Wilson & Charles Israel (b. @1880), Mary Catherine (b. 03/22/83), and John (b. @1887).

A Civil War veteran, he was federally drafted at the stated age of twenty-five, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg February 28, 1865, as a private with Co. F, 91st Pennsylvania Infantry, and detailed to division as a teamster. Listed as absent sick at muster-out, he discharged by surgeon's certificate per general order July 20, 1865, ten days after the rest of the regiment. His compiled military service records are indexed under "McClane," but he spelled his surname as you see it here.

After the war, he lived in both Philadelphia and Baltimore.

Reportedly, there is no grave marker.
