Rhynell had her own career and worked for various telephone companies and retired as a supervisor for Continental Telephone Company. She also worked in retail and had been a beautician when she met John in San Antonio.She was a graduate of Burkeville High School in the Class of 1943. She was a tenacious basketball player in high school and was known for her shining personality. Tenacity and social skills were traits she exhibited for her entire life. She loved family, especially her great-grandchildren and she had many friends.Rhynell was an excellent bowler and had bowled several 200 games. She also loved bingo and traveling. She had visited Germany and Japan as well as the Northern Virginia and Washington DC areas and Omaha, Nebraska.
She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, Albert and Zula Mae Jordan Erwin, brothers, Bobby, Alton, Cecil, Fred, James Wade, George and Harold.
She is survived by her sister, Margia Erwin Straub, her son, Robert and wife Peggy, son John and special friend Jill Callahan and son, Bill and wife Arvida. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Laura, Angela, Jason, Tricia, Jessica, Bobby, Brooke and Matt along with nine great-grandchildren, Sarah, Joshua, Hannah, Grace, Peyton, Micah, Bailey, Lincoln and Zoe.
Visitation was October 7, 2015 and the funeral service was held Thursday, October 7, 2015 at Smith Funeral Home in Newton, Texas.
Officiating was Reverend Van Lowe and Reverend Danny Jarrell.
Rhynell's final resting place will be with her husband John at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
A graveside service will be held for family with Rhynell's son Reverend Bill Smithson officiating.
Rhynell attended Sycamore Community Church in her later years and was a member of Spears Chapel Congregational Methodist Church.
