John is a son of Nancy Naulty and Peter Dalton of Ardbraccan Parish, County Meath, Ireland.

He immigrated to American when only 18 years old. From about 1798, he traveled throughout the seaboard states, and then worked in a sugar factory in Maryland. He traveled through forests and the southern and middle states for several years, hoping to find his homestead.

He eventually arrived in St. Lawrence County, New York and upon seeing its beautiful river, concluded it was the ideal spot.

He returned to Ireland and married Mary McGovern, a girl of his homeland about 1818. Their first son, Peter, was born at his home parish Ardbraccan, where they resided for about three years.

In 1821, they prepared to immigrate to America, where John had earlier planned to take up his homestead. Their second son, Thomas, was born aboard the sailing vessel prior to their arrival in New York Harbor.

They settled at Waddington, St. Lawrence County, residing there approximately fourteen years. The births of their four additional children followed - namely: James, 1823; George, 1826; Mathew William, 1828 and Mary, 1831; all were born at Madrid Township, St. Lawrence, New York.

When their last child, Mary, was barely two years old, John's beloved wife died and was buried on part of the family farm, which at that time was in Madrid Township.

The following year, John married Nancy Ann Caroll, a widow with a young son. They had 5 additional children together.

In a personal biography, Mathew William Dalton later recorded, "Soon after his second marriage my father moved his family to the town of Louisville, near the village of Massena where he had purchased a fine farm of one hundred eighty acres of choice land, and here we took up our abode. My father's second wife proved to be a very noble woman. She was in person tall and very kindly, performing well a mother's part. She bore to my father five children, two of whom died in infancy. The names of the remaining were: Michael, born March 22, 1835; Philip, born 1839; and Jane, born in 1841, all at Louisville, St. Lawrence, New York."

The family later migrated to Racine, Wisconsin and finally settled at Wyocena, Wisconsin.
