Mary is a daughter of Mary Casey and Peter McGovern of County Meath, Ireland. She married John J. Dalton there about 1818. Peter, their first son, was born at Arbrockin.

They immigrated to America in 1821, their second son, Thomas, being born aboard the sailing vessel. All her other four children were born on their homestead at Madrid Township, St. Lawrence, New York.

Her only daughter, Mary, was just two when Mary, the mother died.

The following year, John Dalton married Nancy Ann Caroll, a widow with a young son. She cared for the older Dalton children as if they were her own.

Note: John Dalton and Mary McGovern's youngest son, Mathew Dalton, maintained that his beloved mother was laid to rest on the family farm when Mathew was but six years old. He related that his own grief was "almost insupportable" and that his father was "broken-hearted".

Her burial was said to be the first at that location and others surmise that it eventually became the grounds for the first Catholic Church and Cemetery, described as "Old St. Mary's". This memorial was created using her son's description and the conclusions of other historical cemetery researchers. Special thanks to Dalton descendant, Jim Laudie, and historian, Anne Cady.
