CHORHONUS, Mike and Paraska (nee Luchak)

Mike Chornohus was born in 1888 in Bukovia, Austria. In 1900 his parents Iwan and Mary (Radul) Chornohus, and their six children came to Canada in search of a better life. Nastasia, Mike, Steven, George, Annie, and Katie were born in Ukraine. Harry, the seventh and youngest child was born in Alberta. Iwan and Mary settled on a homestead in the Desjarlais district with the family. Along with the other children, Mike helped his parents clear land for garden and grain. In 1909, at the age of 21, Mike bought a homestead. Then he married Paraska, daughter of Wasyl and Anastasia (Goriuk) Luchak. Paraska came to Canada with her family in 1903 from Ispas, Bukovina. Mike and Paraska farmed on their Homestead in Desjarlais district and were blessed with four children - Andy, Mary, Nastasia and Alex.
Mike Chornohus was always interested in politics. Running under the U.F.A. banner he won a by-election in the Whitford constituency on July 10, 1921. He served as a member of the Legislature Assembly for the remainder of the term until 1925. As a man who was always involved, Mike served as councillor in the Eagle Municipality as well as trustee on the Desjarlais School Board. He remained actively interested in politics until his death on February 17, 1966. Paraksa passed away on September 28, 1985 at the age of 91 years, 11 months.
