True Republican, 20 December 1939

This community and DeKalb county lost a respected and well known resident Saturday evening at 7:30 o'clock in the passing of Jesse Wells Hall, at his home in rural Sycamore. He was the grandson of Marcenus Hall, a DeKalb county pioneer, and the son of Marcenus Hall, the second, who was the last veteran of the civil war in this community to die.

The first Marcenus Hall built the first residence in this vicinity south of Cortland, and there the second Marcenus was born in Pampas, now Cortland, on January 1, 1846, and departed this life on January 13, 1935, at the age of 89 years in his farm home, five miles northeast of Sycamore.

Jesse Hall died after an illness of two years. He was the son of Marcenus and Mrs. Ann Augusta Wells Hall, a native of New York state. He was born in rural Sycamore, January 7, 1871, and had lived on the place that became the family home for 54 years. He attended the public schools and on April 6, 1910, married Miss Minnie Westfield, a native of Charter Grove community. In his early years he taught school for two years, but he heard the call of the land, and, following in the footsteps of his forebears, became a farmer. He was an active man until his last illness overtook him. When young, he joined the United Bretheran church and followed that faith.

Surviving his are his widow; two children, Miss Nellie Hall and Kenneth Hall; one sister, Mrs. Lurana Buzzell, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held from the Kebil home this Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Charles H. Draper officiating, with burial in Elmwood cemetery.
