Civil War Union Army Brevet Brigadier General. An 1829 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he had resigned in 1832, but returned to the Army twenty years later with a re-commission in 1852. He was serving in the Paymaster Department when the Civil War began, and was appointed in 1864 as Colonel and United States Army Paymaster General. He would go on to serve in that duty until he retired in 1872. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on December 2, 1864, and Major General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful, meritorious and distinguished services".
