Memorial services for Heather Ray, 79, of Lake Forest, are being planned. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Libertyville. Born Jan. 9, 1925, in Cairns, Queensland, Australia, the daughter of Robert H. and Ethel (nee Mutch) Watson, she passed away Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at Lake Forest Hospital. Long troubled by lung disease, Heather was brought back to life by the Lake Forest Fire Department in response to 911 calls in early September and again in late October. She recovered each time in the Intensive Care Unit of Lake Forest Hospital, but the gradual deterioration of her lungs finally overcame the best efforts of medicine. Heather attended Blackheath College. After graduation, she worked in various capacities in the Queensland Post Office. She met then Lt. James L. Ray of the U.S. Army in Brisbane in 1944. His proposal was rejected by her mother, but he continued to press his suit by letter, even after being posted to duty in Manila and Tokyo, and after returning to civilian life in the United States. In 1946, Heather flew from Brisbane to the United States via Fiji, Guam, Honolulu and Vancouver. On Nov. 30, 1946, she and James were married at the home of his parents in Libertyville. She quickly assimilated to life in the United States, and was active in the Girl Scouts, First Presbyterian Church of Libertyville, Condell Hospice Auxiliary and the Libertyville Woman's Club. Surviving are her husband, James; her daughter, Peg Ray of Evansville, Ind.; and her grandchildren, Lauron, Kristin and Colin Ray of Bellingham, Wash. and Zachary and Paul Oman of Evansville. Heather was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Robert L. Ray in 1995; and by her sister, Margaret Tovey. Memorials may be made to the Les Turner Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Foundation, 8142 N. Lawndale Ave., Skokie, IL 60076. Arrangements are being made by Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, Libertyville.
