NOTE: This cemetery is sometimes referred to as the Old Walnut Hill Cemetery, the Copple Cemetery or the Jennings Cemetery or Jennings Farm Cemetery (not to be confused with the Jennings Farm Cemetery a few miles south in Jefferson County).

Matthew was the son of David Calvin Roper and Elizabeth Waters Anderson (his mother was married to George Anderson before Roper). Matthew died young, at 9 years and 4 days. An inscription on his stone says "The vine that grew on earth has gone to bloom in Heaven".

We're not 100 percent sure where Matthew was born. It is very likely it was in Illinois, but his father was originally from Tennessee and his mother was first married in Kentucky. It may have been Clinton County, Illinois (it appears the Ropers were there before Marion/Jefferson). But again, he may have been born in Kentucky.

LOCATION NOTE: This inscription was read by Frank Brinkerhoff in 1975. This cemetery is located in the SW 1/4 of the SE quadrant of Section 26 in Centralia Township. The exact location is to the west of Schwartz Road, behind the home at 405 Schwartz Road in a wooded area a few hundred yards behind the residence. The cemetery property was deeded to the VFW Post 2055 in Centralia many years ago, and the legal description lists it as an "Old 1800s cemetery".
