George Hardy Blakley was born on Patterson Creek, Whitley County, Kentucky, the youngest son of George Washington Blakely and Sallie Powers. In the latter part of his parents lives they moved to Huntsville, Scott County, Tennessee. They obtained land on Buffalo Creek and built a log cabin. George married there first to Margaret Chambers and two children were born to them: Windell and Sallie. Sallie and her mother Margaret died and George married again to Malinda Griffith. To them were born 9 children: John Hamilton, Jicy Armelda, Rebecca Ann, Green Washington, Alonzo David, Nellie Jane, Martha Angeline, Nancy Louvania and Curtis Lee. Shortly after Curtis Lee's birth Malinda died and Curtis Lee followed 3 months later. Both were buried on their property on Buffalo Creek, along with two grandchildren, sons of Windell and his wife Etta. George Hardy moved north to Kentucky to work in the coal mines, first to Perry County and then Letcher County. George married twice more, the last marriage being to a widow, Isabell (Wheatley) Stallard. His unmarried children came with him to Kentucky. Nellie and Nannie married brothers William and Samuel Webb. George lived out the remainder of his days in Letcher County working as long as he could in the mines.

The obituary of George Hardy Blakley as published in the Sergent news section of the March 31, 1938, issue of The Mountain Eagle:

Mr. G. H. Blakely, age 76 years, was stricken with paralysis last Wednesday evening about 8 o'clock and was rushed to the Fleming Hospital Thursday morning where he passed away later in the evening about 6:00 o'clock. Mr. Blakely was well known and until recently made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Willie P. Webb of Sergent, Ky.

It will be remembered that a few months ago Mr. Blakely met and after a brief acquaintanceship with Mrs. Isabelle Stallard of Wise, Va., they were married and lived in Wise County. Mr. Blakely at the time of his death was visiting with his children here. He was the father of Mrs. Marion Strunk, Mrs. Willie P. Webb, and Mrs. Sam Webb, all who live here and also of Mrs. E. J. Sailings of Chattanooga, Tenn. Mrs. Sallings was the only child who could not come to the funeral of her father on account of sickness of one of her children at the time. Mr. Blakely's sons, Winifred, Alonzo and Green arrived in time to attend the funeral. Late Friday evening, in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends, Mr. Blakely was laid to rest in the Thornton Cemetery. To all his people and many friends we extend sympathies.
