115 Squadron's Vickers Wellington III (#Z1663) aircraft, with an aircrew of five, took off at night from RAF Mildenhall for an air operation over the Dortmund-Ems Kanal near Lingen in Germany. Z1663 was shot down by a German night-fighter, resulting in its crashing and taking the lives of three members of the crew. The two airmen who survived the crash were captured and imprisoned in a German PoW camp.
