Jerry W. Yates, 74, of McAlester, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015, at his home. Born March 25, 1941, in Indianola, he was the son of Alvie and Elizabeth (Cathey) Yates. He married Wanda Lee Ross on Oct. 17, 1959. He served in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1962. He worked as a carpenter in construction for a number of years and he and his wife owned Yates Grocery in Indianola for 27 years. He also drove a school bus for Indianola Public Schools for 16 years and was a lifelong farmer and rancher. He enjoyed taking care of his cattle, bailing hay and working outside. Survivors include his wife, Wanda Yates, of the home; one daughter, Teresa (Yates) Pirpich, of McAlester; one son, Dr. Russell Wayne Yates, Downey Town, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Bradley Pirpich, Jonathon Pirpich, Kalyn Pirpich, Scott Yates and Jason Yates; one great-grandchild, Brayleigh Gene Pirpich; one sister, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law and mother-in-law; two sisters and one brother. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Tannehill Cemetery Pavilion with Steve Eldridge officiating. Eulogy will be by Kalyn, Jonathon and Bradley Pirpich. Burial will be at Tannehill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
