NOTE: the image here on Find A grave is NOT of William Fitzhugh. It's Johann Gottlieb Fichte. There only one known image of George Fitzhugh, and it appeared in the title pages of his book.

Some sources give his year of birth as 1804 and spell the surname as "Fitz-Hugh."

The Oakwood Cemetery page on the Walker County Historical Society website states that Fitzhugh's Sociology for the South is the first known book to include the term "sociology" in its title. (http://www.walkercountyhistory.org/oakwood_cemetery.php accessed on Aug. 27, 2017.)

According to "Colonial Families of the Southern States of America: A History and Genealogy of Colonial Families who Settled in the Colonies Prior to the Revolution" by Stella Pickett Hardy. (New York: Tobias A. Wright, 1911), page 235, George Fitzhugh and Mary Brockenbrough Fitzhugh had the following children:

(1.) Champ Brockenbrough Fitzhugh (b. 1831) who married Charles Thornton.

(2.) Maryella Fitzhugh (1839-1919) who married a Mr. Foster.

(3.) Augusta Fitzhugh (1839-1908)

(4.) Emma Fitzhugh who married a Mr. Queensberry.

(5.) George Fitzhugh.

(6.) Robert Hunter Fitzhugh (1836-1919) who married Agnes Macon Dade.

6.2.5.3.1.1 - George Fitzhugh - was born 4 November 1806 in Brentown Tract, Port Royal, Prince William County, Virginia in the Northern Neck. He has remote family connections with the prominent abolitionist leaders Gerrit Smith and James G. Birney. He visited Gerrit Smith in 1855 in Petersboro, New York. In 1829 he was living in Port Royal, Caroline County, Virginia. George married in 1829 to Mary Metcalf Brockenbrough, who was born in 1805 and died 1877 in Huntsville, Texas. She was the daughter of Champe Brockenbrough and Sarah Skinker Bowie.

The old Fitzhughs were both literary and military people. George Fitzhugh, Esq., of Port Royal, Va. Was the distinguished author of "Sociology for the South" published in 1854 and "Cannibals All," and a number of other works of merit in ante bellum days. In 1856 the New York Times speaks of him thus: "A genuine Virginian, conservative, talented, refined—one of the old school heroes of the South whose presence and counsel in this age of turmoil should be regarded as a benefaction. Mr. Fitzhugh, probably more than any other writer in the South, has given to the world correct ideas of our institutions and our resources." At that time (1856) George Fitzhugh, residing in that ancient village on the Rappahannock, wrote a series of genealogical articles for De Bow's Review from 1857 to 1867 in which he gave to the world some of the most interesting facts in the history of the ancient noblesse of the Old Dominion. He defended slavery as better than socialism to overcome evils of 'laissey faire'.

After his wife's death in 1877 he moved to Kentucky to live with a son, then to Texas and lived with an impoverished daughter. In 1880 and 1881 he was living in Huntsville, Texas.

During his lifetime he was known as a writer, lawyer and a sociologist.

George died 30 July 1881 nearly blind and aged 74, in Huntsville, Walker County, Texas
